- Petworth House
Built in the late 17th century by the Duke of Somerset and altered two centuries later by architect Anthony Salvin, Petworth House is a truly spectacular example of baroque architecture. It also houses an extraordinary art collection, featuring works by Turner, Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Reynolds. Today, the Lord and Lady Egremont live in a private section of Petworth House, while the rest of the house is managed by the National Trust and is open to visitors. Be sure to check out the globe, which dates back to 1592, and to take a stroll in the ‘Capability’ Brown-designed Petworth Park – if you’re lucky, you might see some fallow deer.
Petworth House has also served as a location for several film productions, including Barry Lyndon (1975), Silver Bears (1977), Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), Maleficent (2014), Mr Turner (2014), Rebecca (2020), Bridgerton (2022) and Napoleon (2022).
Parking at Petworth House is free if you’re a National Trust member, otherwise it costs £4.
