Overlooking a wooded area of Sussex’s splendid High Weald, Nymans is the former home of the Messel family. Ludwig Messel purchased the estate in the late 19th century, and, together with brother Alfred, set about transforming it into what we know today as Nymans. The estate passed through three generations of the family, before becaming a National Trust property in 1953. Much of the Messels’ legacy remains, and visitors can learn about the family by visiting a permanent exhibition in the house. Nymans is a popular spot with local walkers and families alike, and is equipped with a pleasant tearoom. Our recommendation: check out the second-hand bookshop.
