Sussex Craft Awards finalists
Ruby Taylor creates land art, baskets and small-scale vessels using plants, plant fibres and wild clay. Her practice is materials-led and deeply rooted in place, being concerned with origins and connection and the sensory experience of making. She is immersed in the cycle of production: harvesting in a sustainable way, foraging materials from woods and hedgerows, and processing the raw materials.
She studied ceramics, before training as an Art & Design teacher, then in basketry. Her work is also informed by having lived and worked in Sudan and Ethiopia. As a member of East Sussex Archaeology & Museums Partnership, Taylor taught ancient craft and technology. Under the name Native Hands, she runs workshops in wild crafts. Her book, Wild Basketry, was recently published by Bloomsbury.
“A dialogue emerges between myself (my hands), these wild materials and the place. I’m driven by a desire to live a reciprocal life with our ecological relations, alongside the compulsion to create with my hands. I’m committed to keeping a heritage of craft skills alive for the future.”
