Hats off to Hastings Contemporary for pulling off such an major show of works by Chaim Soutine and Leon Kossoff. Curated by the excellent James Russell, the exhibition has garnered a rash of five-star reviews in the national press. Soutine, a ‘peintre maudit’ in the post-impressionist/expressionist era, was a major influence on the post-WW2 ‘School of London’ group, namely Bacon, Auerbach, Freud and Kossoff, who admired – and adopted – his wild, gestural style. There are so many major works on show from both artists, that it seems almost churlish to pick out our favourites, ‘The Pastry Chef’ by Soutine, and ‘Childrens’ Swimming Pool’, by Kossoff would certainly be on our list of take-homes.
