According to Patrick Heron, Matthew Smith was ‘a master of colour’ and ‘easily the most important English painter of his generation.’ Smith was something of an English Fauvist, who studied under Matisse before WW1 became a pioneering force in British Modernism. Heron, born 40 years after Smith, was heavily influenced by his compatriot’s exploration of colour and form, developing into one of the country’s leading abstract artists. This show displays works by both painters, inviting viewers to analyse their connection.
