GEOFF HANDS: In The Garden
Mar 21 10:00 am – Apr 6 5:00 pm
Announcing his second show at Gallery 19a (formerly Coachwerks), Brighton based painter Geoff Hands presents a selection from a group of works that started during the first period of lockdown in 2020 and continues to this day. In the relative safety of his Phoenix Art Space studio, many of the Sussex landscape and Welsh garden paintings that the artist had been developing for several years took on an unexpected development influenced and transformed by research into Old Masters including Rubens, Titian and most especially Jean-Antoine Watteau and his painting, ‘The Embarkation for Cythera’ (1717).
In addition to the figurative imagery, Hands continues to forefront his interest in colour and the materiality of the paint medium that pushes the landscape content into gestural abstraction. The title for the show, ‘In The Garden’, is borrowed from Van Morrison’s song of the same title in which the notion of the garden becomes a transformative portal into subliminal feeling and emotion.
