Ditchling Museum was set up with the remit of celebrating the artistic legacy of the Sussex village it’s situated in. And it’s undoubtedly true that Eric Gill played an important role in that narrative, as the co-founder of the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic, which attracted artists and craftsmen to Ditchling over a 70-year period (even if he soon upped and left to relocate in Wales).

But this puts the museum into a difficult position, as it has become well known, after the publication of Fiona McCarthy’s 1989 biography, that Gill sexually abused his two daughters, Petra and Elizabeth.

In 2017, the museum addressed the issue by framing an exhibition about Gill within the ethical considerations of whether it is possible to separate an artist’s work from their personal misconduct.

This summer, the gallery is putting on a 40th anniversary exhibition, It Takes a Village, exploring a pick of the 20,000 art and craft objects in its collection. The museum’s director, Stephanie Fuller, has decided to approach the Eric Gill issue by asking survivors of abuse to co-curate the section of the show that pertains to the artist. This section is located in a separate room and is not recommended for visitors under 16. People can explore the rest of the exhibition – and there will be plenty to see – without entering this space if they choose. Find out more about the show at ditchlingmuseumartcraft.org.uk
