The elegant Petworth gallery launches Chapter Three of photographer Brandt’s The Day May Break series, exploring environmental degradation. This latest work focuses on South Pacific Islanders impacted by rising seas, following Chapter One, which was photographed in Zimbabwe and Kenya (2020), and Chapter Two in Bolivia (2022).

For SINK / RISE, local people were shot in-camera underwater in the ocean off the coast of the Fijian islands in 2023. The resulting portraits are astonishing, transforming potentially displaced families into melancholy mer-people and imbuing a devastating subject with haunting beauty.
