Anyone who’s passed through Newhaven recently must have noticed it getting more and more colourful as world-renowned supergraphics artists have been painting their large-scale works on walls, underpasses and ceilings throughout the port town, in preparation for this exciting festival. Artists include Amber Elise, Anthony Burrill, Annie Frost Nicholson, Rob Lowe aka Supermudane, Eelus, See Creatures, Ellie Fryer, Paul Farrell, Bec Dennison and Dave Bain (with more to be announced). Struggling to understand what ‘supergraphics’ means? Think public art, think graphic design, think murals, think graffiti art, and throw them all together. This art form has been flourishing since the 1960s when graphic designer and landscape architect Barbara Stauffacher Solomon started mixing abstract design with hard-edged Swiss graphics (in California, natch).
