Iain White – Midnight Sonata 1940

16 Apr 10:00 AM 28 Apr 4:00 PM

Iain White will be coming to Oxmarket Contemporary’s Wilson Gallery with a thought provoking exhibition. The inspiration for the show came about when White stumbled upon some black and white photographs and newspaper articles from the 1940s in his mothers house. These images led Iain to research the Coventry blitz, and to reflect on his early childhood in the city.

The works exhibited are all oil paintings.  Although based on contemporary sources, the interpretation of those sources is selective, sometimes composite. The works are largely figurative, however they are in keeping with the work of many “war artists” such as John Piper, Graham Sutherland and Henry Moore insofar as they resort to varying degrees of abstraction.  Many, of course, convey the overt destruction of the night of November 14th 1940, but some seek to capture the resilience and stoicism shown by the citizens of Coventry in the face of such adversity.

The subject of the paintings in this exhibition conveys a narrative firmly rooted in place and time, a narrative that is again personal and meaningful for Iain.
