Hot on the heels of its tremendous star-turn as host of the 2023 Turner Prize, Towner Eastbourne will host the denouement of this interdisciplinary installation by Florence Peake. Having been on tour in Edinburgh and performed in London, FACTUAL ACTUAL: Ensemble will occupy Towner’s ground floor spaces for the duration, with a weekend of special live performances developed by Peake scheduled for 1 and 2 June. Indeed, the performance aspect is somewhat integral to the entire show; it’s the central means by which FACTUAL ACTUAL strives to accomplish its objective of uprooting and enlivening the act of painting, and in so doing interrogating what a painting can be. Paintings here are not to be confined to a static frame – instead, they will be animated by half a dozen dancers using a rig and pulley system, with the various folds and shapes that are created serving as the work’s form.
