Champs Hill – hosting an exclusive art lecture with Alison Beven, RWA Director
Tuesday 10th October 2023 at 7pm (doors open 6.15pm)
Placing the West: Newlyn School and Lamorna Colony, painters of Cornwall is the Champs Hill autumn exhibition featuring the highlights of our Newlyn and Lamorna Colony collections (Lamorna Birch, Elizabeth Forbes, Stanhope Forbes, William Banks Fortescue, Norman Garstin, Fred Hall, Harold Harvey, Edwin Harris, Harold Knight, Laura Knight, Walter Langley and Albert Chevallier Tayler) and exploring these artists’ connection with place and place-making.
After graduating in Art History from Nottingham University in 1986, Alison spent 14 years in public galleries in Wales, latterly at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, where she was Exhibitions Officer and then Acting Curator. From 1999 to 2013, Alison was Director of Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance, which specialises in exhibiting the work of the Newlyn, Lamorna and St. Ives colonies (1880-1940), a subject on which she has become regarded as an expert and has lectured in the UK, USA and France. She was awarded the British Empire Medal in the 2013 New Year’s Honours for services to Cultural Heritage in Cornwall.
