A compelling collection of Elena Cruz’s paintings, prints and installation shots is currently on display at WIA Gallery in Lewes. Through her vibrant and thought-provoking work, the American-born and Peckham-based street artist explores humanity’s place within complex political and economic systems, providing original commentary on timely topics such as living costs, life as a young artist and social media. A fascinating exhibition, her art discerningly expresses the complexity of being an individual amongst intangible societal structures. Although each piece appears abstract at first glance, a closer inspection reveals rich and layered narratives, all infused with Cruz’s distinct humour and perceptive eye.
