Edward Burne-Jones: Flower Book
Myth, Romance, and Religion

18 Jul – 10 Aug
Edward Burne-Jones: The Flower Book
Throughout his time living in Rottingdean (1880-98), Edward Burne-Jones worked on his most personal of projects; a group of 38 watercolour paintings inspired by the common names of flowers. Leaving them to his wife, Georgiana, she collated them all and with the Fine Art Society (London), published them posthumously in 1905 as a Limited Edition of 300.
Now 120 years later, Rottingdean Heritage is exhibiting one of those editions, with its original
colour plates, back in Rottingdean where the paintings were created.
A truly once in a lifetime exhibition.
“It’s a real pleasure to see these works return to the village where they were created. Burne-
Jones produced many of the Flower Book sketches in Rottingdean, drawing inspiration from the gardens around his summer home, so bringing the prints back to The Grange Gallery feels both fitting and poignant. We believe this to be the first time they’ll be shown so close to where they were imagined, and we’re proud to support a local gallery in celebrating such a deeply rooted
piece of artistic heritage.”
