Dora Carrington: Beyond Bloomsbury

9 Nov, 2024 27 Apr, 2025

Dora Carrington. 1893-1932. Farm at Watendlath. 1921. London. Tate Britain.

In her short lifetime, ‘the most neglected serious painter of her time’ (Tate director Sir John Rothenstein) rarely exhibited her work, which she never signed, and was better known for her association with the Bloomsbury group than her artwork. Carrington received a flurry of recognition late last century, with a major retrospective of her portraits and landscapes – displaying a variety of styles and influences – at the Barbican in 1995, and the film Carrington released the same year, with Emma Thompson in the title role. Running alongside is Maggi Hambling’s Nightingale Night (see ROSA #11 pg 40).
