Adam Dant: Legends of Albion
22 Nov, 2024 – 16 Mar, 2025

‘Troia Nova’ on The Thames
Adam Dant has been dubbed a ‘modern-day Hogarth’ for his hyper-detailed drawings which, according to Newlands House, ‘chronicle life in their densely wrought depictions of public spaces, where historical motifs mingle with present-day observations to create wryly humorous views of contemporary culture’. Readers of The Critic will be highly familiar with his work (recent examples include 101 Uses for an Unemployed Tory and The Starmer Social Sieve: Are You Pretend Working Class Enough to Be a Worthy Peer of Sir Keir?) Dant’s love of charts and maps comes to the fore in this exhibition at the excellent Petworth gallery, featuring heroes from British history and folklore, including Boudica and Brutus of Troy. These are images that deserve close study, filled with wit and satirical observation. Delve deeper at newlandshouse.gallery
