Cara Wassenberg, Artist Metalsmith

British metalsmith Cara Wassenberg creates striking abstract pieces by combining steel, glass and copper. Her organic forms emerge from a profound love of process and wild outdoor spaces, heavily influenced by landscapes she has walked through and coastal waters she has swum in. After initially studying Fine Art in the industrial setting of Coventry, she trained in metalwork at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, later refining her craft alongside esteemed master artisans. Notably, she assisted blacksmith Achim Kuhn in Berlin restoring historic copper monuments, worked with French coppersmith Christoph Desvallees in Normandy, and collaborated with internationally recognised glass artist Colin Reid.

From her established workshop in Southern England, Wassenberg masterfully blends multiple traditional techniques, including forging, welding, casting, patination and polishing. Her work beautifully balances the visual language of the British countryside with meticulous technical execution. Backed by 25 years of professional experience, she balances her dedicated studio practice with education. Wassenberg serves as a part-time BA Metalwork instructor at UCA and a regular short course tutor at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation. She produces highly sought-after bespoke architectural commissions for outdoor gardens alongside smaller, deeply contemplative studio pieces for galleries and public exhibitions.
