John Hitchens comes from a long line of painters of the Sussex landscape (his progenitors include grandfather Alfred and father Ivon), but very much ploughs his own furrow, portraying the Downland countryside he grew up in from an abstract, sometimes almost Aboriginal viewpoint, mark-making on canvas, sand and flint.
