SUMMARY:Jane Bown: Play Shadow
DESCRIPTION:“Other people take photographs. I try to find photographs.” \n\n\n\nSo said Jane Bown\, the Observer newspaper’s go-to portrait photographer for some six decades\, and a talented photojournalist to boot\, whose reputation soared towards the end of her career\, and just keeps on soaring after her death\, aged 89\, in 2014. Now\, a retrospective of her work\, curated by Dr Loucia Manopoulou\, opens at Newlands House Gallery\, the latest in a succession of solo exhibitions. She referred to herself as a ‘hack’\, but Bown’s lifelong career as a jobbing newspaper photographer belied her innate talent. SUMMARY:AFTER-IMAGE
DESCRIPTION:AFTER-IMAGE celebrates the close proximity of the Phoenix Art Space to the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery by presenting a small but engaging display of paintings and photographs inspired by works in the Museum collection. \nThis exhibition has been devised and curated by Geoff Hands\, a PAS studio member. \nHe writes\, \nIt is necessary for visual artists to see and experience original artworks ‘in the flesh’\, rather than only in print or online. Many practitioners are aware of the history behind their respective discipline and see this as celebrating and developing particular subject matters. They may have chosen to empathise with or to react against outmoded forms of representation and now implement contemporary media or frameworks. Works from the past therefore remain alive and relevant to all who view them with a suitably creative attitude and these historical works can be linked to the present either directly or more obliquely. \n A link between an organisation holding historical works of art and a contemporary studio collective so close by is tentatively made in AFTER-IMAGE. An exhibition of ‘new’ work that respond in some way to ‘old’ artworks reveals the many skills and interests of artists from the Phoenix\, whilst acknowledging one of the primary exhibition spaces and institutions in the city. \nTwenty or so works have been selected for AFTER-IMAGE\, including photographs from Murray Ballard and Fergus Heron; plus paintings from Perdita Sinclair\, Stig Evans\, Julian Vilarrubi\, Denise Harrison\, Bernard G. Mills\, June Nelson\, Mike Stoakes and Geoff Hands.

DESCRIPTION:William Nicholson [1872 – 1949]\, Cliffs at Rottingdean\, 1910\, Oil on canvas\, Southampton City Art Gallery\, © Bridgeman\n\n\n\nThe first major exhibition of the English painter’s work in 20 years\, spanning the whole of his prolific career from the Victorian era to post-WW2. Nicholson was primarily known as a portrait painter\, but also offered an important contribution to the still life and landscape genres\, as well as producing publicity posters\, costume designs and book illustrations\, all represented here. DESCRIPTION:Oxmarket are thrilled to welcome ART of Living to the John Rank gallery\, this exhibition is collaborative and is being kindly supported by The Arts Society and Promedica. ART of Living brings together Stonepillow\, the Aldingbourne Trust\, the Apuldram Centre and Chichester College to celebrate how art supports personal growth\, confidence and wellbeing. Although each organisation works with different communities — including people experiencing homelessness\, adults with learning disabilities and young people with special educational needs — they all share a belief that creativity offers a powerful way for individuals to express themselves\, build skills\, connect with others and shape their own journeys. SUMMARY:Sandra Izard - Quiet Reflection
DESCRIPTION:Oxmarket are delighted to welcome back Sandra Izard for a solo exhibition in the Wilson Gallery. Sandra moved to Chichester at the age of 4. Now based in the nearby village of Slindon\, her work is deeply rooted in the landscape of West Sussex. The South Downs\, together with the intimate world of the local pond and her garden\, form a continuing presence within her practice. Drawing and painting have long been both instinct and necessity. During walks\, she gathers impressions through quick sketches and handwritten notes\, later developing these observations into resolved works in the studio. These initial marks capture light\, movement and atmosphere\, allowing memory and emotion to shape the finished piece as much as direct observation. Largely self-taught\, Sandra works across mixed media\, allowing each subject to determine its materials and process. Colour plays a central role in her work; layered washes\, translucent veils and unexpected tonal contrasts evoke shifting skies\, changing seasons and reflected light. Her palette ranges from muted\, contemplative hues to moments of heightened intensity\, mirroring the rhythms of the natural world. Texture is equally important. Surfaces are built through layering\, scraping\, and reworking\, creating depth and a tactile quality that invites close viewing. Fluid passages of watercolour sit alongside more structured marks\, producing a dialogue between spontaneity and control. Influenced by artists such as Ivon Hitchens and Peter Iden\, her work reflects a profound sense of place\, balancing abstraction and representation. Renowned particularly for her watercolours\, she captures fleeting moments in the flora and fauna of the South Downs with sensitivity and vitality. Sandra’s work has been widely exhibited and is held in private collections internationally. Commissions include work for the National Trust and illustration for a children’s book

Well\, in 1989 it seems they did: there were more nude paintings of women than women painters represented in New York’s institutional art museum\, as anonymous feminist collective The Guerilla Girls pointed out in their famous campaign. Charleston is showcasing works from the group’s 40-year career as art provocateurs. This sits alongside a companion exhibition highlighting Virginia Woolf’s equally radical work as a publisher and printer at the Hogarth Press\, which she ran with husband Leonard from 1917 to 1946.
