Walter Sickert / Gladys Hynes

2 May 11 Oct

The Fowler, c.1917-19, Gladys Hynes, Oil on canvas, (76.8 x 67.3 x 5.4 cm), The Wolfsonian–Florida International University, Miami Beach, Florida, The Mitchell Wolfson, Jr. Collection, Photo: Lynton Gardiner

An interesting double header opens this spring at Charleston’s Lewes satellite. One exhibition focuses on Walter Sickert’s works on paper, examining the importance of drawings and prints to the proto-Modernist’s practice. Sickert, of course, was no stranger to Sussex, as a frequent visitor to Brighton and habitual user of the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry. Alongside it comes the first major exhibition devoted to the lamentably overlooked Modernist painter, sculptor, illustrator and designer Gladys Hynes. A political activist and committed suffragist, Hynes produced work that was as bold in its aesthetic as in its conviction.
