This open studio brings together works from late potter Cynthia Howells, her daughter Julie Howells, a multidisciplinary maker, and granddaughter, painter Maya May Jex. These works in her garden studio show a family’s exploration of shape, colour and form, spanning mediums and generations.
Julie uses collage, patchwork and hand stitching with a particular interest in the Japanese art of Boro. She finds solace in the slow act of stitching, spontaneous and repetitive mark making, supported by a dictionary of motifs which informs and inspires her work.
Maya explores optical illusion by distorting geometric patterns through drawing and painting. She uses light and colour to deliberately disrupt the harmony of the final composition. This open studio will house some of her experiments with ceramics inspired by her grandmother.
Cynthia was a keen potter who enjoyed both throwing and hand building; bringing her tubular pots and garden sculptures alive through her exploration of colourful glazes. Cynthia, Julie and Maya’s work tie tighter a generational obsession with art, craft and making.
