SOLD OUT Studio Safari: Paint, Stone, Ceramic
24 Jun 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

The mini-bus for this trip will start and finish at Charleston in Firle, near Lewes Station, on Wednesday 24 June / 10am – 5pm
This immersive, small-group experience will take you straight into the working studios of some of the region’s most talented craftspeople. These curated journeys offer something you won’t find anywhere else: – real conversations with real makers in the landscape that inspires them.
Our first stop will be to meet Tess Newall, the talented decorative artist and homewares designer, to peek behind the scenes of her fascinating, colour-charged Sussex atelier.
Then we will head into the countryside near Firle to step inside Tom Palmer’s workspace. HIs internationally celebrated sculptural work sits in the space between the fine and decorative arts, and we will hear about how he combines ancient and contemporary materials and techniques in his work.
In the afternoon, the Safari will conclude at ceramicist Sarah Walton’s pottery at the foot of the South Downs. Sarah has worked in the same idyllic spot for decades, gaining a reputation for her large salt glaze stoneware forms, but has recently started to make small sculptures inspired by the landscape of the Downs.
You will be joined by your guide Corina – founder of The Makers Directory – and there will be a lunch stop at The Ram in Firle, or you are welcome to bring a picnic.
Spaces on each Safari are deliberately limited to 8 people to keep the experience special and this Safari is being run in partnership with The Charleston Trust.
