From 15 November, Long and Ryle present the extraordinary work of East Sussex-based painter Nick Archer. Archer is fascinated here with the passage of time, which is rendered visible in his works through the use of blemishes and soft distortions. There is in his paintings a fusion of a realistic mode with more abstract, perhaps even magical realist, qualities, which results in a vague resemblance to early photography à la nineteenth century pioneer Henry Fox Talbot. Indeed, Archer works from photographs and he attributes as much significance to a photograph’s physical condition as to the image it depicts. At any rate, Transience is certainly well worth your time.
