Best known for his 1970s ‘building cuts’ – carving into structures awaiting demolition – Gordon Matta-Clark (1943–1978) treated architecture as a contested, evolving condition. This exhibition reveals his radical creative process through archival notebooks, drawings, letters, films and composite photomontages. The materials highlight his navigation of bureaucratic systems alongside the physical reality of his architectural interventions.

The show coincides with the landmark Modernist Pavilion’s own upcoming transformation, making it a highly timely setting for Matta-Clark’s spatial questioning.
