Katja Seaton

Katja Seaton is a Sussex-based ceramicist whose practice merges fine art and craft with a highly refined decorative language. After studying ceramics and metalwork, Katja spent two decades in New York as a cake designer – an era that rooted her work in the principles of precision, ornament, and celebration. This expertise, further expanded by an MA in Textile Design and experiments with materials like silicone, now informs her sculptural return to clay.
Working primarily with hand-built forms, Katja employs coiling, piping, and sculptural building to allow her surfaces to evolve through the careful accumulation of texture. Her technical background in sugarcraft translates seamlessly into clay, where intricate, piped structures spread across vessels like colonies or organic growths. These complex forms are finished with layers of underglazes and oxides, creating a depth of tone that highlights every subtle variation in the clay’s surface.
